PIVOTRY WAVES:  Q4 2010

Pivotry Waves is a free quarterly newsletter about new developments in the Ontario, Canada solar renewable energy industry and based upon the "Solar PV Value Chain" from the Pivotry Perspectives Workshops conducted by Wayne Chang, Ph.D.  You are welcomed to share this newsletter with others.

Pivotry Waves is in four sections:

1.       Feed-in Tariff (FIT) total applications near the end of CY-Q4 in the Province of Ontario, Canada

The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) released its bi-weekly FIT and micro-FIT applications status report as of January 5, 2011 (ref-1.1).  A total count of 4106 applications were listed for all sources of energy (e.g. solar PV, wind, hydroelectric and bioenergy) and 3,656 applications were specifically for solar PV.  This represents approximately 89% of all applications for projects.  The total applications represented 16,245 MW, and solar PV was 4,886 MW or approximately 30% of total.

From this same report, a sub-group of data was shown for the Capacity Allocation Exempt (CAE) projects.  CAE means they can be developed through an expedited connection process without significant impact on existing transmission and distribution systems.  The cumulative count of CAE solar PV applications was 3031 out of the 3106 or approximately 97% of total.

2.       Data Charts (pages 2-5)

From this cumulative wave of FIT and micro-FIT applications, the solar PV data sorting shows…

  • Solar PV ground-mounted and rooftop applications were 15% and 74%, respectively for all energy sources
  • In terms of total MW energy, solar PV represented only 30%, while approximately 66% was for wind energy
  • For CAE projects, solar PV rooftop applications represented 95% of total
  • In terms of total MW energy, CAE solar PV rooftop also represented 87% of total

3.       OPA Priority Ranking of First Round FIT Contracts (pages 6-7)

The OPA released a priority ranking of first round FIT contracts on December 21, 2010 (ref 3.1). The data encompasses 242 projects submitted between October 1, 2009 and November 30, 2009.  Of these projects, 72 were specifically for solar PV. This represents approximately 30% of all projects.  The top 20 province wide ranked FIT projects are described in this newsletter.

  • About 54% of these FIT contracts are in the East region of Ontario, and 99% are for ground mount systems
  • Many of the FIT project owners have nameplate capacities of 10,000 kW (14 out of the 20)

 4.       Pivot Perspectives

Coming to Ontario…

  • IKEA Canada is the first retailer under the FIT program to exclusively own, install and operate one of the largest rooftop PV networks at its three Ontario store locations (ref-4.1)
  • MEMC and Flextronics to produce solar panels with initial annual capacity of 50 MW in Q2 2011 for SunEdison (ref-4.2)
